    77年にデビュー、80'sアメリカ都会型ロッカーの代表ともいえる存在。AOR全盛の当時、タフでパワーのあるロックに全米が飢えていた中で颯爽と登場、同時に洗練されたユーモア感ももった新しいキャラクターの出現として脚光を浴びる。
    サウンドは古典的なハード・サウンドを踏襲しつつ、パワー・ポップ風な聴きやすい音作りがヒットチャート的な華やかさを継承。本人の（実は）甘いルックスとも重なって、そこそこハードそこそこメロディック——といった、いかにも80年代的なアメリカン・ロックの完成形というべく存在となっていった。なお、デビュー時に「元ニューヨーク市警」という触れ込みがついて回ったが、それは本人も認めている事実である。本人曰く「元ポリスとか言ったら、みんな面白がって話題にしてくれるだろ？　デビューの前に珍しい仕事をやっておこうと考えて、ポリスを選んだのさ」てな話である。（小池清彦）
